Who is Copywriting best for?
Are you a writer with dreams of writing full time without the time constraints of a day job? Are you an English major looking to make good money? Do you want to travel and live location independent? Are you a stay-at-home parent who wants to build a business you can work on while the kids are sleeping? Copywriting is a really compelling career path because of its flexibility. It’s a great option for anyone and everyone who is willing to put in the work.
Even if you aren’t really sure what copywriting is, that’s fine! I didn’t either until I started looking around for copywriting courses. I knew it would give me the lifestyle freedom I was looking for without sacrificing a solid income.
If you’re someone who is a self-starter. Someone who wants lifestyle freedom, but you don’t want to sacrifice a paycheck, then the Filthy Rich Writer’s Comprehensive Copywriting Academy might be right for you.
“It’s incredibly difficult for most writers to make a good living. I mean: next to impossible. It’s deeply unfortunate, but it’s true. Ask a novelist, journalist, blogger—the vast, vast majority will never get a shot at making six figures. But copywriters get paid well. Businesses understand the value in what we do and they pay us well for it.” —Nicki Krawczyk on How to Break Into Copywriting
The Basics
The Comprehensive Copywriting Academy by Filthy Rich Writer (If you’re interested in the course name, you can hear the background on the name here) is a complete course for copywriting. It takes you from knowing nothing about copywriting to having a complete understanding of, not just copywriting, but how to make a living as a copywriter.
There are 30+ foundational videos to help you fully understand what copywriting is, how it’s used, and they will help you become knowledgable in the field. This alone could have been the cost of admission. Anyone who has waded into copywriting at all knows how difficult and how steep a learning curve there is. It’s not something you can just pick up and start doing.
There are multiple videos that teach you how to make your money back on the course immediately so you can start earning money fast and worry about building your business along the way.
The really impressive part of the course is the deep-dive bonuses. There are more than 15 specific courses designed to ensure you understand the entirety of whatever topic you might come across in copywriting. Honestly, that’s where I was blown away by the course.
And this isn’t even mentioning the Facebook group (more on that later)!
Pricing
There are free copywriting courses out there. It’s the truth. But I believe you get what you pay for. If you really want to take your copywriting career seriously, you need to have someone in your corner who is going to work with you. That’s where this course is different from others that I looked into taking.
In the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy, you have access to other copywriters through the Facebook group that will help you stay on track. In that way, there’s no real ‘end’ to the course. People are asking for and offering help in the group so that everyone can be successful. Again, that alone is probably worth the price of admission even if there weren’t all the extra bonuses and easy-to-follow courses.
Is the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy right for you?
Pros
-
The sheer amount of information was impressive. It really felt like I was in the throes of a college course designed specifically for students to learn copywriting. The difference was that college courses are thousands of dollars. This was *much* cheaper than a college course without sacrificing the quality or quantity of information.
-
The “Deep-Dive” Courses were where the course really outdid itself. I mean, it was worth the cost just to fully understand copywriting. But then the specific deep dive courses (15+) like “How to Price Your Services,” “Find Small Business Clients,” and “How to Create Spec Ads,” really made this course overdeliver.
-
The Facebook group is phenomenal and supportive.
-
This course allows you to go at your own pace: You don’t have to wait for an enrollment period. You simply sign up and you’re off and running!
Cons
The reality of building a copywriting career is that it’s about developing a skill, turning it into a service, and selling it. The course does an amazing job of making the process easy. However, there are some challenges that can seem hidden that I want to air here.
-
I wanted to get into copywriting for the freedom and to work independently. There are times when the course suggests having a relationship with a graphic/web designer. This might take some networking. That’s certainly not worth avoiding copywriting altogether. But it is something you might want to consider having in the back of your mind.
-
Don’t get stuck on the Foundations Courses. I found that I wanted to treat this course like a masterclass and really ensure I got my money’s worth. But honestly, I wish I’d just used the foundations courses like a brief overview that I could come back to. They’re great at exploring the theory of copywriting and have some important lessons. But I really feel like they’re better served as a quick overview. Listen to them at 2x speed and take only sparing notes as necessary.

How Easy is it to use?
I found the course outline really simple to follow. There’s a video at the beginning of the course that talks you through the suggested format and how to use the online course screen.
The one drawback (which is honestly more of a pro than a con) is that there are a lot of training videos. It can sometimes be tricky to locate exactly what you’re looking for.
The Facebook group has a learning curve as well, but this will ultimately depend on your familiarity with Facebook. If you use the platform often, you’ll be completely fine. I can not stress enough how important it is to join the Facebook group. The people in the course are so supportive!
How long does it take?
This is an important question but one that is a bit difficult to answer. The course itself has hours and hours worth of content. Anything and everything you need is at your fingertips. Which means you could take months to get through the entire course. But this all depends on how much time you have during the day to devote to the training.
If you’re wondering about how long it will take to start making money, there are some overview courses that show you how to start making money right away. I opted not to do that personally, but they’re there for you.
Also, you can easily make your money back on the price of the course from your first client. I’ve seen multiple comments in the Facebook group of people who land their first client and earn more than the cost of the course. Some people are able to completely replace their traditional income in just a few weeks.
I’ll say this, the course is dense. In a good way. They provide you a lot of information. If you’re going to meticulously comb through each course and take notes and review them and pause and replay, this course might take you a while.
For me, I’ve been at it for a few months but with this website and the pending launch of the Writerly Lifestyle Interview Series, I’m running low on time. But if you’re willing to focus solely on copywriting, it’s really up to you how long it takes before you start making money!
Alternatives
There are a variety of free and paid alternatives to learning copywriting. There are tons of videos on YouTube that will tell you about copywriting. But for many of those online resources, it’s worth remembering that you get what you pay for.
The other paid options are places like SkillShare. SkillShare is great for an overview of a topic. However, most of those courses run just a couple of hours. I chose not to go that route because I imagined bouncing from one course to another, trying to get a lot of information while also watching the same overview again and again. Plus those are often one-time purchases without much follow through. If you’re like me, you’ll never get around to finishing them.
The reason I chose the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy was that I wanted to invest in something that people were passionate about. Look at the other reviews around the internet on this course. People are constantly talking about how great it is because they know it works.
If you’re still not convinced…
Look, I get it. I’m just a guy on the internet raving about this course. My suggestion, if you’re interested at all in copywriting, check out this Free Video Training. It costs nothing and will give you the overview you might need to make your decision.
If you’re into podcasts, I highly suggest their copywriting podcast. It might help you decide if copywriting is right for you!
